Numbing Cream

Tattoo numbing creams, most commonly containing lidocaine, are sometimes used to help reduce discomfort and anxiety during tattoo sessions. While they can make longer or sensitive sessions more manageable, they also come with risks that may affect the tattooing process and final result. Please read the following carefully before choosing to use numbing cream.

Potential Benefits

  • Reduced discomfort: Can significantly lessen pain, particularly in sensitive areas.

  • Lower anxiety and movement: May help clients remain still, allowing for more precise work.

  • Longer sessions: Can make extended or multi‑hour sessions more tolerable.

Potential Risks

  • Changes to skin texture: Numbing creams can cause the skin to become overly soft or “rubbery,” making it more difficult to tattoo and potentially compromising the final outcome.

  • Short duration and rebound pain: Effects typically last 1–2 hours. Once they wear off, pain may feel more intense than usual.

  • Adverse reactions: Possible side effects include allergic reactions, swelling, puffiness, or redness, which may damage the stencil or prevent the tattoo from being started or completed.

  • Artist limitations: Some artists choose not to work on numbed skin due to the impact on technique and results.

Studio Policy on Numbing Cream Use

I am willing to tattoo clients who choose to use numbing cream provided they fully understand and accept the risks involved.

  • Clients must only use numbing creams that I have specifically recommended and that are purchased from reputable retailers.

  • Online marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace are known to carry counterfeit or unsafe products.

  • If a client arrives having used an unapproved numbing cream, I reserve the right to cancel the appointment and retain the deposit.

Application Requirements

  • Numbing cream must be applied before your appointment, strictly following the timing instructions on the product packaging.

  • The cream must be ready to be removed at the start of the appointment so the skin can be properly prepared for tattooing.

  • Please bring the original box and tube to your appointment so the product can be checked prior to starting.

Patch Testing

Clients who wish to patch test a numbing cream should:

  • Apply a small amount to a limited area of skin, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Remove as directed and observe the area for 24 hours for any signs of irritation or allergic reaction.

If you have any questions about numbing cream use or approved products, please contact the studio in advance of your appointment.
